Intro: BMW made "city" side cases that are smaller than the regular system cases. Their volume is 22 liters vs. the 35 liters of the regular cases. They are also thinner which gives the bike a thinner rear profile. They came in two colors. The most common color is black but BMW also produced white painted city cases for police bikes. In addition to K bikes, these city cases also fit early F650s, R80s and R100s. They mount to the same luggage "Z" racks as the regular cases do.
Benefits: TOP LOADING: They are top loading with a single latch. This makes them easy to load/unload so they are convenient for running errands.
THINNER REAR PROFILE: This makes them ideal for filtering, lane splitting and other situations where a thin rear profile is advantageous.
SMALLER VOLUME: I take them on shorter rides/tours since they force me to pack light. Since they're smaller and weigh less than the regular cases they're a bit easier to mount/unmount and carry around.
HINGES LAST: They only open about 15-20° so the plastic hinges don't wear out as quickly as the regular case hinges that open 90° do. Approximate Inner Dimensions: I don't know if the enginerds at BMW did it on purpose but city cases are the prefect height for vertically carrying bottles of wine.
