Battery Charger & Power Outlets Battery Charger The LCD clock in the instrument cluster of K bikes causes a slight "parastitic" drain on the battery. Therefore, if your bike is going to be sitting for an extended period then it's a good idea to either disconnect the battery or keep it on a float charger. One of the more popular float chargers is the Battery Tender Junior made by Deltran. It is a "smart" trickle charger that can be left hooked up to the bike 24/7 without risk of damaging the battery.
Power Outlets The power outlets above the ignition coils on most K bikes and in some K bike handlebar pads are commonly referred to a Powerlet outlets. Powerlet is a brand name for a plug/outlet that is generically referred to as a European DIN plug. Here's a picture of a Powerlet plug. As you can see, they are very easy to wire up using a small flat screwdriver.
Another name for these is Hella (lighting manufacturer) plugs. If you search eBay for "hella plug" you'll find several styles of them available for a good price. However, I would recommend not buying these inexpensive ones from China. They are of poor quality and difficult to wire up.
Since the power outlets on K bikes are unswitched power that go directly to the battery via the #4 fuse, a convenient way to keep your battery charged is to use a Battery Tender Junior with a Powerlet plug wired to the end of one of the connectors that come with it. © 2013 Drake Smith - Please do not use or reproduce this elsewhere.
