Bad Instrument Cluster Backlights Occasionally one or more of the backlight bulbs will go out in a K bike instrument cluster. The usual suspect is that one of the bulbs has gone bad. However, sometimes the wiring has failed to one or more of the sockets. This diagram shows the polarity of backlighting bulbs looking at the instrument cluster from the back.
By removing all of the backlight bulb holders and using a continuity tester between all of the sockets you can determine where the wiring has failed. If it has then an easy approach to fixing them is to take a piece of wire, strip both ends and jump it from a known good connection to a known bad one by sticking the exposed wire ends under the bulb holders when you reinstall them. When putting the bulb holders back in be sure to check that the copper foil "flaps" on each side have not been folded under.
For example if one of the lower bulbs does not have good power then you can jump it with a wire from a known good one:
